About

MOSS is a Guardian built, web-based software application enabling the 15 SPSS to effectively schedule and execute telescope mount operations, including all electro-optical sensors and associated personnel. The development of the application pilots a sustainable path to prod for 15 SPSS and future applications.

For the first time- All in one scheduling, system monitoring, and feedback.

Mounts (Telescopes) on Haleakala in Maui, HI

Led design on a critical 0-1 project for the US Space Force, achieving operational acceptance in under a year.
Our team developed and deployed MOSS leading to growth in system capacity by 150 days annually, a 41% improvement over previous systems, delivering 15-20% more Space Domain Awareness data to the War fighter.

Impact: Why does the business care?

The focus through this project always led us back to the ā€œso whatā€ . How do we frame the problem space so we are on track to hit outcomes decided on in collaboration with stakeholders.

I coached on outcome oriented practices as well as working as an agile team pivoting and making changes where necessary.

We were also able to shadow operators with onsite trips giving us invaluable perspective and insight.

Highlighting conflicts sooner to reduce the number of missed or rescheduled events.

We cross referenced what the operators were trained for and at what level with their availability and the event needs per shift in order to highlight areas that needed to be back filled in order for the events that had been approved to be run successfully.

Reimagined the Daily Status Report- From a static PDF into the ether to a fully integrated data point

Including the daily status report into MOSS gave some of our biggest outcomes. It not only saved time for the operators autopopulating, and dispersing data for each other and leadership, It laid the foundation for the analytics dashboard.

Increasing utilization balance between Ops and Research

Research done by the likes of the University of Hawaii always took a back seat to operations in getting their viewing events approved. We were able to find a better balance by replacing old practices and creating an easily understood path for new external requestors.

Looking to the future: Scaling MOSS

There are opportunities with squadrons outside of the 15th that could utilize this scheduling software. I’m excited for the possibility that this could help solve scheduling issues across the SpaceForce. In the new year, the team will push this forward and see where else we can land it!
